1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/8 tsp. salt
2 tblsp. sugar
3 tblsp. butter (cut into small pieces, room temperature)
5 tblsp. buttermilk (regular milk and even soy milk work just as well)
1 tsp. vanilla


Preheat oven to 400ºF.

Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse sand. Stir in the buttermilk and vanilla.

Dough should be able to form into a ball (though probably not without help). If it isn't sticky enough add more milk in tablespoon increments.

Form into a 1-inch thick disc and cut into 4-6 pieces. Bake for 15-18 minutes.
